Psychotherapist in Rhode Island

Matthew Mooers, M.A.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Meet Matthew Mooers

Starting in late August, I will be joining PVD Psychological Associates as a Postdoctoral Fellow. I offer online and in-person individual therapy to adults of all ages. With a theoretical foundation based primarily in learning theory, I heavily incorporate third-wave cognitive behavioral therapies into my practice, includingAcceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP).

The services that I provide are grounded in my strong value of the relationship between therapist and client, and I often integrate key concepts from humanistic, existential, and psychodynamic theories. Having previously trained in university counseling centers, community mental health centers, and private practice, I have experience working with clients with a range of mood, anxiety, body image, and trauma-related concerns. I have also particularly enjoyed supporting clients who seek to explore their sexual orientations, gender identities, and racial identities, as well as helping clients to navigate their career paths, relationships, and personal values.

My Background

I am earning my doctorate in clinical psychology at Roosevelt University, and I have completed my clinical training in university counseling centers at Northeastern Illinois University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Wichita State University. I also trained at United Stand and Guada Psychological Services in the Greater Chicago Area, as well as the School Based Health Clinic in Haysville, Kansas.

Alongside my psychology career, I have enjoyed a ten-year career as a massage therapist and a tai chi instructor, and I have had unique opportunities to combine my interests, such as by co-facilitating tai chi intervention groups across a network of community mental health clinics in and around New Haven, Connecticut where I worked together with a research team of clinical psychologists from the Yale University School of Medicine. I have found that my diverse professional interests ultimately inform my holistic approach to therapy, as I consider the interactions of the physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being of the clients with whom I work.

My Approach & Philosophy

My overarching goal as a therapist is to provide clients with opportunities to feel safe and supported as they more deeply consider who they are and what they want in life.

I emphasize cultural humility and sensitivity as I get to know my clients, and I am affirming of the multi-layered and uniquely intersecting identities that they hold. I emphasize mindfulness, relaxation, and acceptance-based strategies while working collaboratively to identify practical skills and ideas that clients can implement to address the challenges that they face in life. I also take a nonjudgmental approach to developing insight into potential patterns in these challenges so that we can more effectively work together toward long-term, meaningful change.

I respect the courage that it takes to begin working with a new therapist, and I would be happy to answer any questions that you might have in considering working with me. Feel free to reach out!
