Clinical Psychologist
Meet Dr. Jonathan Dator
I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Rhode Island and am a bilingual (English and Spanish) and bicultural therapist. I provide individual therapy to older adolescents and adults. I have focused my clinical work on providing care to disenfranchised, marginalized, and underserved groups. I take an integrative approach to therapy, bringing together my training in interpersonal therapy (IPT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), within an overarching social justice framework. I specialize in multicultural counseling, student mental health, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and working with the LGBTQIA community as well as individuals with disabilities and chronic health conditions.
In addition to my work as a therapist at PVD Psychological Associates, I am the Associate Director of Training at the Personal Counseling Center at Providence College. I have worked in numerous college and university counseling centers and completed both my predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at counseling centers.
Being involved at a systemic level is very important to me and I have held leadership positions in the Section on College and University Counseling Centers of the American Psychological Association, the National Latinx Psychological Association, the New Jersey Psychological Association, and the Latinx Psychological Association of New Jersey.
My Background
I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Multicultural Counseling from Seton Hall University. I am also a recent graduate of Harvard Medical School’s Global Mental Health: Trauma and Recovery Program. Prior to my doctoral program, I received a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) and Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Counseling from Boston University. I completed my pre-doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology at the University of Notre Dame Counseling Center, and a Post-Doctoral Psychology Residency at the University of California, San Diego Counseling & Psychological Services.
My Approach & Philosophy
I believe therapy should be a place where you truly feel safe and comfortable enough to discuss everything going on in your life. I see the therapist-client relationship as unique, and a collaborative alliance. Working from a biopsychosocial model, my approach involves flexibility, meeting clients where they are at, and taking a “whole person’ perspective in order to provide the best treatment possible. Ultimately, my goals as a therapist are to provide guidance, support, evidence based tools and techniques, while still challenging clients to work toward their personal goals.
I enjoy working with clients to process and explore their emotions while also teaching them specific skills to utilize on a day to day basis. I work from an overarching multicultural lens and draw from my training in mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to integrate these techniques into therapy.
