Pregnancy and Postpartum Issues

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders

The therapists at PVD Psychological Associates specialize in working with women throughout their pregnancy and postpartum. We will assess for important shifts that may indicate postpartum depression and/or anxiety or, in the case of traumatic labor experiences, postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder. Together we can work on behavioral strategies to manage individuals’ mood, anxiety, disruptions in sleep, breastfeeding concerns, prioritizing self-care, and combatting isolation and loneliness that may come with being a new parent.

Postnatal Depression and Anxiety for Partners

Partner Postnatal Depression and Anxiety is often overlooked, but can manifest in much the same way as postpartum depression or anxiety for new mothers who were pregnant. There are many different ways to start a family, whether it be through IUI, IVF, using a donor egg, reciprocal IVF, fostering and adoption, or surrogacy, so we know that not every parent becomes one through pregnancy. We frequently work with new mothers who were not pregnant as well as fathers, and have a special interest in working with LGBTQIA couples on family planning. The clinicians at PVD Psychological Associates are aware of the many different ways to start a family, what they “look like,” and the unique challenges families may face while trying to get pregnant, undergoing prenatal care, and then the postpartum experience.
